Dermoscopy Dermoscopes
The DermLite and DermoGenius are highly accurate oil-free pocket epiluminescence microscopes. There are several models of the DermLite. A clear and deep view into pigmented lesions can be made in seconds with these instruments. The optics are of very high quality and there is no distortion at the edges. Many lesions can be examined in a short period of time. These oil free instruments include a magnification lens, light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, and polarizing filters for glare reduction. Light shined into the skin is scattered by the stratum corneum and produces a glare just like light scattered from the surface of the water on a sunny day. Oil placed on the skin surface makes the skin transparent to light and eliminates the glare and reflection. However, oil is messy. Application of oil to many lesions is time consuming. The polarizing filters on the oil free dermoscopes eliminate the need for skin contact and oil, allowing a much quicker, more convenient examination. Dermoscopes are small and easily carried in a shirt or coat pocked. The LEDs lights are very bright and efficient. I change the battery on my DermLite about every two years. Photographic documentation of pigmented lesions can be performed with a dermoscope attachment to a camera. DermLite and DermoGenius sell these photographic instruments . They can interface with computers so that storage, retrieval, and follow-up of pigmented skin lesions on a computer is now possible.
