History of Dermoscopy

Skin surface microscopy started hundreds of years ago. The term dermatoscopy was introduced in 1920s with the introduction of a new diagnostic tool resembling a binocular microscope with a built-in light source for the examination of the skin. The term Dermoscopy was introduced in 1950 when a dermatologist used the instrument for the evaluation of pigmented skin lesions. In 1971 Rona MacKie identified the advantage of surface microscopy for the improvement of preoperative diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions and for the differential diagnosis of benign versus malignant lesions. Then Austrian, German and Italian investigators refined and studied this technique and established the diagnostic techniques and criteria that we use today. The first Consensus Conference on Skin Surface Microscopy was held in 1989 in Hamburg and the Consensus Net meeting on Dermoscopy was held in Rome in 2001. These meetings standardized the definitions of structures seen in benign and malignant pigmented lesions.
