Sexually transmitted infections

Previous HSV type 1 infection

Previous HSV type 1 infection

Previous infection with HSV type 1 reduces the rate of acquisition of

genital HSV type 2 infection, reduces the severity of initial HSV type

2 infection, and may increase the proportion of persons acquiring HSV

type 2 asymptomatically or subclinically. The presence of HSV type 1

antibody is associated with a decreased likelihood of detecting

antibody to HSV type 2 in women.

Genital infections HSV-1.

Genital infections with HSV-1 are associated with less asymptomatic

shedding, lower rates of clinical recurrence, and lower rates of

transmission.

HIV infection

The rates of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection are rising, the

highest prevalence being in the group infected with the human

immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Genital ulcer disease is a risk factor in

the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1). HIV-1

virions can be detected in genital ulcers caused by HSV-2, which

suggests that genital herpes infection likely increases the efficiency

of the sexual transmission of HIV-1. The treatment of genital herpes

decreases the rates of HIV infection.
