Herpes simplex, syphilis and chancroid present initially with ulcers.
Warts and molluscum contagiosum form papules with varying and
distinctive surface characteristics. Chancroid, lymphogranuloma
venereum and Donovanosis (granuloma inguinale) are rare and almost
never seen in the United States. Chancroid is a common cause of genital
ulcers in some third world countries. Twenty percent of the population
of the United States over the age of 12 has serologic evidence of
genital herpes. Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) and
also infect about 20% on the US population. HPV is a cause of cervical
cancer.
