The diagnosis can be proven by obtaining a skin biopsy. The yeast infection tinea versicolor resembles vitiligo. This diagnosis is easily confirmed by obtaining a skin scrapping and viewing the yeast under the microscope.

The doctor made a clinical diagnosis of tinea versicolor but the patient failed to respond to treatment. A biopsy and skin scrapping demonstrated that this was vitiligo.
