Cicatricial Pemphigoid Treatment
Treatment of cicatricial pemphigoid is based on the severity of disease and on the site of involvement. Mild or localized disease can be treated with topical steroid preparations. Dapsone may also be tried. However, in severe cases, systemic glucocorticoids are often necessary. For resistant disease, an immuosuppressive agent such as cyclophosphamide or azathioprine may need to be added. Cyclophosphamide provides better treatment results than azathioprine but it is more toxic. Because multi-organ involvement is typically seen with this disorder and because of the potential for severe complications, patients often need to be managed by a team of specialist physicians.
